D - The Diamond

This April for the #A-Z 2020 Challenge  I have taken short stories from books of Fr Anthony De Mello – “the song of the bird” and the “prayer of the frog” .  I enjoyed  reading his book and I would like to share these stories and hopefully believe it  will inspire you too.

“Detachment is not that you own nothing;
But nothing should own you”

When the Sannayasi reached the outskirts of the village and settled under a tree, for the night, a villager came running up to him and said. “The stone! The stone! Give me the precious stone!”

What stone asked the Sannayasi?

“Last night Lord told me in a dream that if I went to the outskirts of the village at dusk a sannayasi would give me a stone that would make me rich forever”

The sannyasi rummaged in his sack and pulling out a stone, he said, “He probably meant this one. I found it in the forest yesterday. Here, it’s yours if you want to it.”

The man gazed at the stone in wonder. It was the largest diamond in the world –the size of a man’s head. All night he tossed about in bed unable to sleep with this diamond.

Finally at the break of the day he woke the Sannayasi and said

Give me the wealth that makes it possible for you to give this stone away.”

What do you think of this story ? I would be glad to hear your thoughts.

Thank you for reading this post, appreciate your time :)

  1. Wish we had this kind of detachment from material things. The cause of all our sufferings is actually our attachment to material objects. So wonderful that the man realized what is true wealth. Thanks for this inspiring story, Genevive.

  2. Aah....nice story. Material things can never give us peace of mind. Inner peace can only be achieved through detachment. Well written...:)

  4. Thank you shilpa, am glad that you found this story inspiring. Yes agree its the attachment to the material objects that causes suffering. we have examples all around us how much suffering has been caused in families due to attachment to properties and things...

  5. Third time lucky? I hope so - am now on lap top, posted twice yesterday using ipad but it clearly didn't take. I loved this post Genevive -the man learned a very valuable lesson from Sannayasi, namely the wealth that it takes for a man to give away this precious stone.
