Yesterday I got the news that Sushant Rajput, a 34 year old actor who acted in Hindi movies
Shud Desi Romance, Rabta, untold story – Dhoni, and PK are popular ones. I have
watched him as a Television actor and remember him winning one of the dance
shows too. He was steadily rising and
establishing himself even though he had breakup with a long standing
relationship with a tele artiste. The last movie which I saw was “Chichore”
wherein he dealt on how to battle suicidal tendencies and shockingly he himself
committed suicide.
It is sad to hear that
he was in depression for the last six months and was on medications. The
reports also say that he had two assistants and a domestic help at his place
when he committed suicide. It’s
heartbreaking to know that his last call was to his best friend who was not
available at that time. Rest in peace Sushant Rajput. This is a wake
up call for all of us especially in this time of lock down it becomes essential
for us to talk about suicide and spread awareness instead of waiting for the
International Suicide Prevention Day that falls on September 10th every year.
There are so many
questions that have no answers at this moment.
What we need to understand is that Suicide
is Preventable and Depression is Treatable. There are also those who are
surviving and have survived depression with support of Counseling, family
support and friends.
As a Psychological
Counselor at the Campus I have come across students who have suicidal ideation and stressed for variety of reasons and seek help. While all of them do not need medications,
Counseling can help them to deal with these thoughts. Very few of them will
require Psychiatric help who give them medicines to reduce anxieties or even
alter and stabilize moods.
At our centre we are
very particular with our students when they are on medication and we
encourage them for support counseling
where in they are connected and regularly motivated to adhere to follow the
doctor’s advice and also taught how to stay positive and work towards their
goals and achievements. Some of them take counseling seriously and stay in touch
with us and also recover smartly understand themselves, while others once
symptoms are gone they even stop medicines and come back again with similar
problem.
Mental health is still
a taboo in our country and most shy away from asking for help when they require
and suffer alone and in silence. Hence
its very important for us to keep spreading the message of hope and Suicide Prevention is
“EVERY ONE’S RESPONSIBILITY’ not
just those working in the health and service sector. Each of us can make a
difference where ever we are by being aware and spreading awareness on
Depression. I have posted on this topic even before – I have given links for
further reading. I thought of posting
