Najat is the child of the 70”s and the first women to be appointed as Minister of Education, and Research. She has held other prestigious posts as Minister for Women Affairs, Minister of Youth affairs and sports and Government spokesperson, has been a councilor of the city of Lyon, responsible for major events in the country.
She was the second child in a family of seven children, born in Moroccan countryside, in insignificant village near Nador in the Rif region.. Once a shepherd girl of four who tended goats and fetched water from the well – Najat moved to France with her family and faced the real world full of opportunities as well as struggles.
The Moroccan girl who had no proficiency in French learnt the language by the end of her first year in college. In 1982 she joined her father a building worker, with her mother and sister – grew up in the suburbs of Amiens.
She inherited hard work and resourcefulness from her father who disciplined his daughters not allowing them to socialize till the age of 18. Which gave her the opportunity to completely focus on the studies.
Najat took up two jobs to share the financial burden of her family while pursuing her Master’s. In the process met her fellow student and got married. Her political career began with her joining the Socialist Party as an advisor to the Mayon of Lyon. She later was elected as the councilor and appointed as the Minister of women’s affairs.
The first women Muslim and the youngest person to ever make French Minister of Education. Despite of all the challenges that she faced as a migrant and struggles with the language, adjusting to the new environment Najat is a great example and model for all the youngsters to learn to fight and rise above all limitations – there are many youth who just keep dreaming about making it big in life; but very few determined to really chase after their dreams and act upon it.
Najat is truly an inspiration and a living example for all the youth - from a background of a shepherd girl to a Minister J must have been a tough journey, her life speaks volumes of what grit and will power can do to persons who burn with passion to strive for excellence.
In the words of Najat “I have always advised the youths to get involved in politics. The best way to be happy with your future is by playing a part in it. If you’re just a spectator of collective fate, you’re bound to feel frustrated”
I am inspired by this young lady; hope you are inspired too… let us spread love and peace and invest our time in making a difference in the lives of those around us.
