April blogging #A-Z 2018- K

This post is written for the April blogging #A-Z 2018.
I have chosen the theme Books and Authors for this year.

K – Kahlil Gibran

One of my favorite author is Kahlil Gibran - somehow I love his writings, that has deep insights , full of wisdom, very unique expression  reflective and very provoking. I have with me 4 books with different titles – Spiritual Sayings of Kahlil Gibran translated from the Arabic and edited by Anthony Rizcahhah Ferris which is full of sayings and few stories.

I got a gift book from a good friend of mine, for one birthday years ago of Kahlil Gibran that had 3 different parts of stories The  Broken Wings, Tears and laughter and Sand and Foam. I found it heavy and read few pages and put it back, hopefully will try reading it again.

Then I got two more books from my colleague - The Wisdom of Kahlil Gibran Edited by Joseph Sheban which has sayings from A – Z.  The most famous and popular one book is “The Prophet” which has been translated in many languages and illustrated with drawings.

A few of my favorites from “The Prophet”
On Marriage
“Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.

Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone.
Even as the string’s of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping.

For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.

On Children:

Your children are not your children.
They are sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love and not your thoughts
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls.
For their souls dwell in the house of to-morrow,
Which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backwards nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

Self knowledge

Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and nights.
But your ears thirst for the sound of your hearts knowledge.
You would know in words that which you have always known in thought.

You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dreams
And seek not the depths of our knowledge with staff or sounding line.
For self is a sea boundless and measureless.

Friendship

Your friend is your needs answered.
He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside.
For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.

Few more quotes from his book - The Wisdom of Kahlil Gibran

Action- “A little knowledge that acts is worth infinitely more than much knowledge that is idle”

Beauty – “Beauty is not in the face; Beauty is a light in the heart.”

“Life without Freedom is like a body without a soul, and Freedom without Thought is like a confused spirit… Life, Freedom, and Thought are three-in-one and are everlasting and never pass away.”

“Reason and Learning are like body and soul. Without the body, the soul is nothing but empty wind. Without the soul, the body is but a senseless frame”

“The power to Love is Gods greatest gift to man, For it never will be taken from the Blessed one who loves”.

“Love is the only flower that grows and blossoms without the aid of seasons”

“Keep me away from the wisdom which does not cry, the philosophy which does not laugh and the greatness which does not bow before children.”

I loved writing this post and  inspired myself :)
Thanks for reading my post, would be glad to know your thoughts.

May you be happy !

  1. I have read Khalil Gibran's quotes but never his books. His quotes are deep and insightful and he has the knack of saying such beautiful things about life and relationships. Thanks for introducing his books to me, Genevive.
