This post is written for the
April blogging #A-Z 2018. I have chosen the theme Books and Authors for this
year.
M – Men are
from Mars Women are from Venus
By John Gray
John
Gray is an American relationship Counselor, and it is said that he began a nine
year association with Maharishi Mahesh yogi before beginning his career as an
author and personal relationship counselor.
Dr Gray is a certified family therapist, and a member of the American
Counseling Association. This book is a popular one and sold millions of copies,
and is dedicated to his wife Bonnie Gray
This
book is a gift book for my wedding by one of the Priest Friend who was also a
colleague, presented to me 18 years ago – it’s an interesting book wherein the
author uses metaphor in clearly stating the differences between Men and Women belonging
to different planets, Mars and Venus. The conflict that arises from the differences
hinders the couple from experiencing a mutually loving relationship. This book has 286 pages to read and has 13
chapters.
These
books highlights on how men and women differ in all the areas, not only they
think differently but also feel, perceive, react, respond, love and appreciate differently.
This book also gives some practical techniques for solving problems that arises
from differences.
The
author discusses in great detail all the differences bringing insights in
understanding how men’s and women’s values are inherently different and try to
understand the two biggest mistakes we make in relating to the opposite sex:
men mistakenly offer solutions and invalidate the feelings, while women offer
unsolicited advice and direction. The books talks about how remembering the differences
mistakes can be corrected and we can respond in ways that are productive.
This
book also talks about how men’s abilities to solve problems without
interference, and women like to talk about their feelings and the different ways they cope with stressJ
what motivates a man and what motivates a women and how they commonly
misunderstand each other due to their differences in the languages they communicate.
The author further explains as to how men and women have different needs for
intimacy, and common ways that unknowingly turns off the partner and how to
avoid painful arguments and practical suggestions for supportive communication.
A few quotes from this book to motivate
and inspire:
“When men and women are able to respect and accept their differences
then love has a chance to blossom”
“Men are motivated and empowered when
they feel needed. Women are motivated and empowered when they feel cherished”
“A women under stress is not immediately
concerned with finding solutions to her problems but rather seeks relief by
expressing herself and being understood”
“Just as man is fulfilled through working
out the intricate details of solving a problem, a women is fulfilled through
talking about the details of her problems”
“The best way to help a man grow is to
let go of trying to change him in any way.”
I
felt happy to go through this book once again briefly for the A-Z challenge and it
continues to inspire as I read about some of his personal experiences in his
life and the learning’s from his marriage...
Thank
you for reading my post, I would love to hear your thoughts J
Be
Blessed & Be Happy!
I remember reading this book while I was in the hospital waiting for my labour pains to start and my doc said that this isnt the time to read this book :D
ReplyDeleteIt has some great insights and is thought-provoking too.
Oh my God:) admire your passion for reading... I wouldn't have read in a hospital waiting ... but I like your attitude and happy to know that book insightful.
DeleteI've heard of the book, but yet to read it. I'm generally wary when a man says what a woman is all about and expects us to accept it as truth. It's his perception of things. I read that last quote, for instance, and think it also applies to a woman.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your first sentence being part of patriarchal society, women were told how to be and behave:) It is the difference in perception of everything as man and women. Yes the last quote could be applied to both women men. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, appreciate you.
DeleteNice quotes you have shared from the book. Laughing on Shilpa’s comment . :D
