I spotted this place in our
city – this is a park which is closed down due to COVID 19. This is the place
children used to play every day, senior citizens take a walk and the youth hang
around in this place… with the gates being closed, all age groups are stuck at
home with online classes, work from home, webinars and zoom meetings are the
connect. On the other hand families are forced to stay indoors and home, which
is a positive aspect but not for victims of violence and abuse, which has
increased due to COVID 19.
Added to the above are an
increase in mental health issues too such as fears, anxieties, sleep,
loneliness, isolation, depression and other insecurities of students especially
those who have not written their final year exam, still others who have lost
their jobs because of economy leading them to depression and suicide. Some of
the suicides are impulsive, still others who have been suffering from long and
finally take the extreme step to put an end to their suffering.
As per the National Crime
Records Bureau, every hour one student commits suicide in India; the ratio has
increased from 324 a day to 366 a day, out of which 130 are in the age group of
18 -30 years. Suicide among young people is a serious issue and prevalent
problem, it is said that suicide is one of the leading cause of death.

hurting- it is not a sign of weakness to ask for help. It’s a sign of strength”

Today being 10th September,
2020 -World Suicide Prevention Day. The theme for this year is “Working
Together To Prevent Suicide”, Let us together spread awareness in
whatever we can to put a stop to this preventable form of death.
I had attended a Suicide
Prevention Webinar recently which was organised and facilitated for the faculty
of a college. Today there is a list of programmes organised by the Department
of Psychology, Law College and initiatives taken up by the academic staff
college of the campus.
