The Enthusiasm of Communicating through Letters!

free images from Google

I was reading Vidya sury’s post on thousands words worth picture http://vidyasury.com/2015/09/words-worth-snailmail.html. While reading through the post so many thoughts filled my mind and I for a brief while I went backwards, taking a reverse gear remembering all the lovable and memorable moments and excitements of waiting for the postman week after week, reading letters coming from my friends, uncle and also cousins.

I loved receiving letters and I used to collect letters and keep it safe in a file; and whenever I felt like reading I would just pick it up and went into another world with the writer, happily listening to the conversation.

I have memory of my elder sister who joined the convent, writing beautiful inland letters for us; from Dharward, a novitiate, a place where the young girls are trained to become nuns. Where she was a novice – it was a pleasure for my dad to read her letter, which was written in tamil,  while all of us sat and heard what she wrote…. My mom kept all her letters safely in a trunk for a very long time; and after her death the letters became all the more precious as my mom used to see them and cry…. I held those letters written in ink for some time, as I got it after my mother’s death… some of her articles like her specs, hymn book and a few sarees was given to me. Then I found those letters becoming soft and because of the folds tearing into pieces…and then I let go of it…

Then I also recall some very great conversations with one of my cousin brother; who that time was posted to Gujarat from Pune on work and was very friendly and sweet. His letters were mostly in Tamil, and I loved the language as Tamil was my first language in school. I knew to read as well as write Tamil and his letters were full of love, affection and affirmation a brother can express to his sister. In between he will mix Hindi and I did enjoy mixing languages and writing, some times even quotes and songs that expressed caring nature of a brother (even the rakhi songs).  I remember sending a small rakhi in the envelope for him and waiting eagerly to his acknowledgement and to hear from him.

Now when I think about it; I feel funny and crazy for being so passionate in penning every thought to this brother; and yes also happy because now I realize that I had a person on the other end who listened to all my silly stories and still loved and accepted me unconditionally. Gradually I lost touch and we moved on in our lives.  Last year I got opportunity to go to pune and I ensured that I met him and started reconnecting once again, and felt so happy.
one of the condolence letter from a friend
Similarly I had an uncle in Riyadh, a mechanical engineer, who was very fond of me and always affirmed me for every small thing I did, whether I read the bible in the church, started prayers or sang – he used to always appreciate me.  He was also a distant relative of our family from my father’s side. One fine day he met me in the church and told me that he got an assignment in Riyadh and he would be away for a couple of years. He had three sons an one daughter and he considered me his eldest daughter and made a request that I should keep in touch with his family, as he is away and guide his children as they were all very much younger to me.
A special card from a good friend

I took this up seriously and started visiting his house every week and there it was I was getting every fortnight one letter from him, as he used to call his house and his wife (my aunt) and his children would tell him of my visits. Every letter was filled with thanksgiving of how much it meant for him that I visit his house and pray in his house;  the letters were very neatly written in a cursive handwriting and I still remember the colour of the paper, it wa a bright yellow and written in black ink.  It looked like that he had some very special letter pads (which was very popular – I remember stocking letter pads with various designs and smiley’s etc to write letters.
A thank you note from group of friends
I also remember receiving a few letter pads as gifts on my birthdays as most of my friends appreciated my letters to them and they knew that I would love to have it. So with the latest design and stock of letter pads I used to write everything about myself, his family, the church and the activities going on in the community and also what the lunch I had in house, birthdays I attended of his children and also some lovely bible quotations as affirmations.

I remember when I was in school I used to copy a pen pal addresses from the small magazine called “Teenager” which was a monthly small booklet for youngsters, and few more magazines that  used to carry addresses of  persons interested in pen pals.

What I dreaded the most was the telegram, which used to come in a line or two, and mostly telegrams communicated serious messages of illness, death and in very few occasions it would be surprise birthday and anniversary wishes.

Letters have always been part of my life and I realize now how much I have lost out on writing; now I do write emails, but no more handwritten letters…. I used to have a good stock of thank you cards and get well cards, which I also used to post along with the long letters I wrote. These were simple joys in life…. the communication was from the heart, ensuring that what is written is not hurting the person and there was so much love, concern and care in our expressions, as  I used to write to persons who are far away from home and from their loved ones. Always thoughtful that they are supported enough to be able to carry on their responsibilities assuring them of my prayers, love and care. The response was beautiful letters filled with acknowledgements, appreciations and blessings.

I did receive a couple of very thoughtful letters from two of my friends; after the death of my son, it was a condolence letter, written neatly on a white sheet of paper, expressing their sadness and also comforting me …. I loved reading them and have kept it safe… found one in my cupboard.  Also found a thank you card that I received from my previous office I worked; where all my colleagues have written stating how much I mean to them… there are a lot more cards special cards which I have kept safely.  Unfortunately I have not kept all  my letters.. but they are all their in my mind, a soft copy (memory) which can never be destroyed; which has a high recall value.

"A letter is a blessing, a great and all-too-rare privilege that can turn a private moment into an exalted experience”. Alexandra Stoddard.

Gratitude List for September 2015.

I have written Gratitude List post  for September,2015 and am linking this to Gratitude circle.
Feast of Our Lady of Health, Hyderabad
September is the month of celebrations; coming from a catholic background, this month is also dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health, which is named after Mary the mother of Jesus in the bible.  For years we have been celebrating her birthday and the best part is that my daughter shares her birthday with her on 7 September, followed by my mother in law on the 8th September – so it’s a month filled with birthday celebrations.

The other birthdays of the month was my neighbour Lucy, my friends daughter, Arushi,David's niece Diana Marcus and another two small kids, Tabitha & Sam

Mother in law & Maria Dorothy my daughter
Black Forest cake

My childhood friend Violet

Visiting the local shrine with the family is mandatory every year, and meeting a whole lot of extended family members, friends and neighbours who have now moved away to another place is fun; as we get to see only once a year. I was glad to meet one of my childhood friends and catch up with her; we exchanged cell numbers and started chatting on phone, reconnecting our lives and picking up from where we left, it’s been a long time; and I felt happy to renew the contact.

Nice to be connected with bloggers who posted on the suicide prevention day; sensitizing and spreading awareness on suicide prevention. I felt very happy to read some very inspiring and meaningful posts on suicide prevention and could not resist but join their conversation. You may read if you are interested in making a difference and share this to spread the word around, we need not help 100 people, if we can help one, we have done our part.

I am grateful for the weather in Hyderabad; it’s been raining and I am glad for the rain; being the rainy season; and with water shortage every summer, we were worried, as July and August is already over and there was no sign of rain and now in the previous week we had rains a couple of days and the lovely showers every evening. It has been a cooling experience, bringing hope to our fears, now we see water is full and there is sense of satisfaction, we had some rain for this rainy season.

Celebration of  our small community in our area.

We had a one year celebration in our small community, wherein we meet regularly for prayers to build and uplift one another; we have more than 100 Christian families in the area where I live. But we have a very small group who come in regularly for prayer and fellowship… this was a small initiative from our parish to begin a group in the respective areas, where families can come together and pray together for the community and uphold one another’s faith. It’s been a positive experience and I am grateful for families who come to pray and share their faith.

I am also thankful for the interactions I have been having with a couple of bloggers on line and the feedback on some of the issues that I am facing. I do appreciate and value their sincere compliments and comments.

Amidst all the celebrations in this month – I am grateful for my daughter’s exam that went on smoothly; wherein I did not have to take a lot of stress running around my daughter to revise and study… with minimum motivation and little bit of encouragement I helped her to plan and implement her schedule… not perfectly.. but a little bit of flexibility. So today even the little bit help is not required, as yesterday was the last exam, and overall she has done well.

I am also grateful to be part of life skill training for young adolescents who are HIV+ve. It gives me a lot of satisfaction to get into meaningful work.

I am Grateful for the break I will get tomorrow to have some fun time with my daughter and I am also happy that all of us in the family are in good health, and have had a pleasant September.

Be Happy!

Suicide – A Cry for Help

Every year September 10 is celebrated all over the world as Suicide Prevention Day and I feel its important to sensitize and spread awareness that suicide is the most preventable form of death. With an alarming increase in the suicide rates in our state, and with a special emphasis on Hyderabad, the need to spread awareness about identifying suicidal ideation is high. Creating a first line defense to prevent suicide is the need of the hour.

I am glad to read shipa’s post http://shilpaagarg.com/2015/09/myths-and-facts-about-suicide.html#respond that speaks about myths and facts about suicide.

The daily news paper carries everyday at least two or three articles on suicide. Recently there was news of the two students in different situations committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling. There was also another incident wherein a living together couple chose to commit suicide due to financial crisis leaving a small little child in one of the flats in Hyderabad, the neighbors found the couple hanging and the baby crying.

Yesterday too there was news that a student from one of the private college was caught robbing cell phones from the hostel room. Unable to face the situation, he walked straight and jumped from the third floor, the CCTV footage has captured every detail of it, shocking the other students and the management.

Reasons for suicide could be many; a lot needs to be done in terms of spreading the word around; and helping our youngsters build resilience to deal with the issues they struggle with,  by  helping them create space to express, vent and articulate issues so that they find help to a temporary problem.

Ready to Church -  2015

My daughter’s birthday today, and I am very happy and grateful for her in my life, for the beautiful gift that she is; I am grateful for her growing up years, for all those who were part of my life, accompanying me in various forms to help me bring up my daughter who will complete 14years….. So I am feeling “top of the world” for the last 14 years, there is too much to write…. Enjoyed every bit of my journey with my little girl who is now in her teens.  This day is filled with memorable moments and joy!

Today is also Tabitha’s Birthday, my nephews little daughter, a pure bundle of joy; and we have always loved and enjoyed her company, her grandmother style of talking and the expressions are simple the cutest; and we never know how the time flies in her company, I am grateful for her in our lives, as she shares her birthday with my daughter.

I am grateful to my mother-in-law who made an effort to make sambar with drumsticks (dal) and sent it to my daughter. We appreciated in her old age for the gesture and also happy that she is able to live on her own.

I am also grateful to the beautician who lives close by; and is always kind and generous with her service.  I have always gone for the last one decade for my hair cut, and also taken my daughter to her… I admire her simplicity and the courage for having faced a traumatic situation, wherein one fine day, she gets the news that, her husband is killed in a car accident.

Beauty Parlour cum residence
She is a young widow  with two sons my daughter’s age, managing her life.  I am inspired by the way she has coped with the situation and runs a beauty parlor just closer to my place. She is also very creative and I am impressed with some of her creative works.

I am grateful for the Good health of me and our family;

The ability to do our individual work and manage ourselves independently

8 Photos of Happy Moments !

I am glad to take part in this 8 photos of happiness tag; as I love albums and its my favourite past time, when I read vidya’s post I was glad to get this information. So here out of so many photos I picked up whatever I could get hold…. As there are so many of them. These are some very special ones of my life.

Thanks Vidya for inspiring me to do this post http://vidyasury.com/2015/09/happiness-is-homemade.html

The birth of my daughter was a memorable moment of my life; having married late in my life, and when everyone around me felt that I may not conceive at all, I saw before my eyes a miracle – my first child was born.  I was in a complete state of gratitude having endured 18 hours of pain as the doctors were trying for a normal delivery, and finally had to give up on emergency to a C section … despite all the discomforts, it was pure joy to see my baby girl.

This picture was taken when I was taking her to the church for a baptism ceremony. We named her Maria Dorothy as our family members are devotees of mother Mary, and Dorothy meant Gift of God. Maria Dorothy was just one month old, a happy child, always smiling and slept throughout the naming ceremony.

Maria Dorothy’s first day in school, the photo shows her in the school uniform ready to go to school. We were so happy and surprised that she never cried, even though we found so many children crying around her being the first day in school. She was smiling and happily entered the class room.

This picture was taken when Maria won the fancy dress competition, she stood first as a lambada girl, and her father was so happy and proud, David and Maria posing for a photo in the school premises, while I got busy clicking the pictures.

That’s Mario Emmanuel, my son hugging me with joy, the season was Christmas, all of us are dressed up to go to the church, Emmanuel was playing around while the other family members were getting ready, and when I came out ready – he just came running around and hugged me with a smile, while my daughter Maria Dorothy captured this moment; an it has become unforgettable in my life, as my son is no more…. This picture brought in some very sweet moments of my life.

Maria Dorothy and Mario Emmanuel at the Infant Jesus Shrine, Viveknagar, Bangalore. This was one of our family trips to this shrine and both of them were playing in the church compound and my son is literally made to pose for the camera, as he held a rose and feeling tickled.

This was taken in a photo studio, it was the birthday of my daughter, and she was first time wearing a long skirt and dressed up with all the accessories, she was so happy that we stopped the auto and took her to the photo studio to click this photo where she is happily smiling.

I enjoy riding, and am happy learning to ride this brand new bike and feeling thrilled. Bike has always been a great companion friend of mine; I am so much attached to this bike that I practically use this vehicle for everything; riding to my workplace, picking up groceries, picking and dropping my daughter to the bus stop, paying up the bills, visits to the bank, post office, hospital, and there is an endless list of things to do. I feel very happy as I ride feeling the freshness of the breeze, and getting things done quickly.

This was Christmas celebration at YWCA and Maria participated in the fancy dress competition and got the first prize. My husband David took the effort of helping her to dress up like a tree, bringing all the required material to make her look like a tree, while I was busy writing my last exam completing Msc Psychology. I remember walking in directly from the examination hall to the celebration and embracing my daughter, congratulating for winning the first prize.

I am glad to attempt this post today; and you are most welcome to take this forward. Following are the rules:
